Has any one tried connecting an Ipod directly to a car amplifier without using a head unit? We are in the process of restoring an old car which has one of those old push button radios mounted into the dash. We want to keep the dash original which means leaving the exiting non working unit in place. What we would like to do (if possible) is connect the speakers to a small amp that we will mount behind the dash and connect an iPod directly to the amp. Has anyone done this and can recommend a good amp that will do this job? Many thanks in advance
The only thing I can think of (I can't garantee it would work) is if you bought a 1/8" phono jack to RCA adapter cable and plug it into the RCA input on an amp. The problem will be you won't have any volume controll.
I bought one at best buy, has a male 3.5mm jack on one end and on the other end is 2 RCA jacks, plugs into your amp and ipod, you use the volume on the ipod works perfectly!
You can basically hook any type of source to an amplifier. Cd player, dvd player, ipod, tape player, VCR. Or even a headunit that has almost all of those in 1! =P. The only trick is finding the rite adapters!
U will probably have to bump up the gain. Depending on the generation of ipod i have read they put out between 1.10 and 2.4 volts. My hu puts out 2 volts but I know optimal is 4 or more.
