I've just finished installing some Infinity 605cs splits up front and Infinity 4.5" in the back doors. These were purchased from eBay and I have a feeling they may be fake... My head unit is a Kenwood KDC-U7046BT. I tested each speaker as I installed it, and all was good. After the install I sat and listened for a while, enjoying the better sound than my stock Subaru speakers. I tweaked the settings for a while until I got things sounding good. Then I went for a drive… Everything was fine for a few minutes, then the volume started to decrease until the music was barely audible. I switched sources from my Aux input to the radio - same thing, very low volume. I powered off the head unit and waited a few minutes and turned it back on again. Volume was back up, but within a minute it started to fade out again. I got back home and switched everything off for a few minutes. I turned the ignition to ACC and fired up the head unit again. Volume was back and stayed at normal levels for the next ten minutes. I started the engine and the volume again started to slowly fade out. I did notice that the tweeter I have in the drivers side door is much quieter than the other side and there's a distinct burning capacitor smell emanating from it! Does anyone have any idea as to why the volume would be dropping? Could it be due to a faulty tweeter?
Check for any speaker wires shorted to ground, especially the tensile leads of the mids touching metal when in the door. Also inspect x-overs. A blown capacitor on a tweet or a bad voice coil on a tweet will create an excessively low impedance to the radio. If all worked fine before speaker installation, and now you are having issues, you need to check all your wiring
Alot of Infinity splits are 2 ohm, check to see if your set is.Your Kenwood radio probably doesn't support a 2 ohm load.At least it's worth looking into.
I'm not seeing that Kenwood model anywhere. So, if a Kenwood has a speaker problem that it doesnt like, all audio will shut down and PROTECT will be blinking on the display. tommy2tone is right most Infinitys are 2-ohm, but the Kenwood should have no problem with that. If a crossover is bad then it could cause a weird problem, but you state it fades out after the engine is running. Check the radio install. Especially power and ground and use a Digital Multi Meter. Also make sure speakers are hooked up correctly, pos to pos and neg to neg, even though that should not cause the problem you are describing, but check it anyway
Thanks for the replies. While driving to dinner last night I gave the system another go and it faded again, this time the head unit went into Protect mode. As you have all mentioned, checking the wiring was the way to go. I did this and was happy to find my wiring wasn't bad, but I think I found the cause. The lead in from the speaker terminals to the coils on the rear speakers were very close to the door body and I suspect one or both of them were rubbing and causing a short to earth, and after a couple of good bumps there was a good chance of both lead ins shorting and putting the unit into Protect. So, a bit of gaffer tape and careful repositioning and everything seems good again ☺ Now to work out why there's so much water in my doors and how to fix that! P.S. The Kenwood model number is an Australian one and closely resembles the KDC-BT645U - worst quality Bluetooth hands free ever - for what its worth!
Thanks for that info, it is appreciated. And my son has a KDC BT645U in his car, the bluetooth works flawlessly. I wonder how much difference there is beween your model and his???????????
The Bluetooth works perfectly well, in terms of connecting to my iPhone however the sound qaulity for the person I am calling is terrible (I can hear them very well). I even have an external microphone, and this provides even worse performance than the built in mic. It seems to pic up road noise and voice seems to be restricted to a few hundred Hz above 1kHz. I switch to my TomTom cradle that has hands free and the difference is astounding. I wish I had it working like your son does!
