Currently running a 12" kicker comp vr 2 ohm 2010 model sub wired to 4 ohms. using a kicker zx450.1 amp bridged at 450wx1 @ 4 ohms. gain turned about 3/4 the way up and remote bass control a little over half way. using a kenwood dnx5120 headunit and i never run it past 18-20 volumn out of a possible 36 i believe. sub was running less than a week and now static like sounds coming from the sub. i had bought 2 of these subs, so i boxed the other one up for warranty and put the new one in. 2 days later....same result. another blown ( i guess they are blown ) sub. what could be causing this and is the sub actually blown? i wanted to try and get a little insight before calling kicker tech support and they deny me warranty for some reason.
Are you sure your subs aren't grounding on something that would be causing the static? Have you heard anything that didn't sound right before the static started? A short in my RCAs made my amp do some crazy **** to my subs and one sub had a slight tear in the cone afterward.
i thought that might be it, so i pulled that cvr out and put a new one in ( i bought a pair ) and it worked fine for a few days. this is really starting to **** me off. i have never had ANY probs with any of my systems before and definately have never had any probs out of kicker. specially a kicker amp matched with kicker subs.
Are they in a ported or sealed box? Where's the crossover freq. set at? You may also want to double-check you have it wired correctly. That sub should be able to take that amp okay.
RCA's, short/ground some were, maby bad amp, hmm idk could be couple things.. is your box to big? too small? if ported/ tund to too low of frequency??
3/4 on the kicker amp is pretty high, are you sure it wasnt clipping? I just saw you had bass bost on, they WILL clip the amp, and in turn blow the subwoofers...Turn the BASS BOOST OFF Most likely kicker will not warranty a sub blown due to clipping.
thank you very much for the replies. turns out i just had a bad pair of subs. talked with kicker tech support and double checked everything ( HU settings, amp settings, box size, sub wiring, ect ) and they said they would cover them both under warranty. checked both subs ( 2ohm subs ) DVC's and each one was only reading 1 ohm. so the voice coils on both subs burned out. i actually bought 4 of these subs and installed 2 in the exact same boxes with an old school 1 ohm stable audiobahn amp and they rock out, so i knew something had to give. but again, thanks for the helpful responses, i greatly appreciate it!
im confused. each coil was reading 1 ohm? or both coils together were reading 1 ohm? because when you wire 2 D2 coils in parallel you get a 1 ohm load. if they were blown, they would read all over the place or just zero.
I had a 12" cvr that read 1 ohm on both sides of the sub. It's also a dual 2,I think the coils melted together internally.I got it that way and gave it away to my neighbor.
i dont know, i tested them just like kicker tech told me. he said they should read 2 ohms each the way i understand it. but yes i checked each one individually and they read 1 ohm. they smelled burned, very strong scent.
It could have been a bad batch of subs. Maybe they were built on a Monday or a Friday. They say to never buy an American car manufactured on a Monday or Friday, LoL. You just happened to get two of em!
I doubt they were a bad batch The amp was set way to high your suppose to match the gain to the rca voltage anything past that is distortion.Distortion Is in most systems but the amount of distortion is critical. What happens is more distortion the quicker the sub gets hot eventually the glue melts or the wires melt together.I seen things like this happen lots of times because the typical person thinks the gain is a volume knob. This is the most common way people blow subs they think this subs is rated 400 watts rms and this amp is only 450 watts rms I should be able to turn it up with no problems this is the 1st mistake.Depending the system the amp at a quarter of the way up could already be producing 450 watts Anything after that is pure distortion.Heres a quik way to test if your amp is clipping take a ddm set the setting at dc voltage put the positive lead on the the positive outout of the speaker jacks on the amp the negative to the negative if your seeing more than 1 volt dc your clipping pretty bad.
well when speakers are being broken in, you almost always smell the silacone at one time or another, you should always eas them in the first week though nothing over 60% of their capacity. but it doesn't sound like you did that the 1 ohm thing is interesting but extreamly unlikley out of 2 brand new subs to both have the same fault even if their from the same production run. they do have quality control. but take it back send it back, get a new one. personly i dont touch those bass knobs they always lead to trouble when you can tweak your bass like that on the fly.
