    Hi,

new user here after stumbling accross the site from google.

just looking for some help and info on some speakers i am looking to buy.

    looking at components & tweeters.

    rather:

    http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/vibe-slick-57.html

    or:

    http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/jbl-gto8628.html

i have used JBL and VIBE before and both suit. however i think i will be going with the VIBE's as JBL are abit too heavy in bass and not as good all rounder as the VIBEs.

also looking at tweeters, again probably vibes:

rather those black air model or the space 3D ones. i dont know anything about tweeters except that they produce the high frequency sound.

so... assuming i go with the vibe 5x7's and tweeters, am i going to need a crossover installed in the doors? only had a quick look but some crossovers are priced at over £200?! yet some come free with component speakers.

just abit confused as to which ones i should get and how i should go about installation.

also, if anything is worth mentioning to me about installing this setup in a 02 ford focus then please let me know before i buy. I.e mounting depth etc.

i have previous experience of audio installation but not components.

If any more info is required, please let me know, although it'll be tomorrow before i get a chance to check back on this thread.

    Thanks in advanced.

I am assuming you are adding on a second set of tweeters here...

If so, are you looking to put them in the door along with the 5x7 inch coaxs?

Also what is important is how much power is driving them and at what x-over frequency do you want? I myself would go about 5kHz give or take at 18dB/octave. the effective upper end of the 5x7 inchers is in that area.

But realistically, I would opt for a component set of 5 or 6 inch mids and tweeters. This generally will yield far better overall sound quality than a 5x7 coax and another set of tweeters added on. You start putting too many drivers running the same frequency range from the same area and SQ will suffer (lots to explain...phasing, arrival times, etc)

This is one place that me and The Viking disagree. I personally like to use a full range speaker (coaxial) and an add-on tweeter. In fact, my truck, my sons car, and my wifes car uses an add-on tweeter and the sound quality is phenomenal.

In order to make it work, an 18dB crossover is a must. It puts the tweeter out of phase and makes it less directional. Also point the tweeter at the rear view mirror, not at you. Finally, location, location, location. Put the tweeter in many different locations, double stick, velco, whatever it takes. But listen to it for an hour or two, drive around. Try a few different locations. Pick the one that sounds best.

And a 4500 to 5000Hz crossover point, good idea, I like it.

    Anyway thats my 10-cents worth

Just looking at the specs, I like the JBL, but you should always choose what sounds best to you.

    thanks for the replies.

dont understand most of that, lol. sorry, still bit of an amature. i am only running one power supply which is all car electrics going to the standard battery. dont think this would be a problem as ive had amps/subs etc linked to this battery before and no problems, wouldnt of though component & tweeters would drain any more juice than the amp???

i was going with the 5x7 because i can do a straight swap with the original ford ones that are in my doors. also i was planning on mounting the tweeters near the wing mirrors or on the 'A' frame with the crossover in the door somewhere.

what i was trying to ask was, why are some crossovers more expensive (pretty self explanatary i know) than others. would it be possible to install the above into my car at the moment, i.e the mounting depth was ok so i can do a straight swap.

also i dont know alot about tweeters as i mentioned. am i right in saying that the tweeter cables run to the crossover with the 5x7s? how would that effect my setup if i wanted to install another pair of 5x7 in the back at a later date?

basically im just after some advice on these kind of speakers, i have had some experience in subs/amps/head units & 6x9s. however no experience with components and tweeters. i am mainly playing rock / metal music so i wanted something quite good overall which is why im gonna go with the vibes as the JBLs are abit to heavy on the bass side.

sorry if im not being clear enough in my explanation. i will do again if people are confused in what im asking.

Crossovers can vary in price due to the types of components in them, ie....air core or iron ferrite inductors, mylar or electrolytic caps etc....6, 12, 18, or 24 dB per octave roll offs....etc.

You can easily tie in the extra tweets with your 5x7 coaxs. Right in the door using the same wiring that goes to the coaxes. Not a problem! And as far as adding on another set of coaxes later on in the back, again, shouldnt be an issue....

thanks for that. thought i was going to have to buy a xover for the tweets. thats simple enough to wire them to existing front speaker wiring.

ill be looking online to see what mounting depth i can get away with in a focus as well as looking for a decent place to mount the tweeters.

    thanks for the help
