I installed the Clarion 5.25" components today. I like the tweets on the dash-sound great. But they're far too loud. I can barely hear the mid/woofers. I calculated the cap value on a passive crossover calculator and it comes to 8500Hz. But it sounds like they play about 2k and above. I guess 6db/octave is not very effective. If I cut the 2.2K, 6k, and 15k on the EQ, it makes them sound better. But then that makes my rear speakers sound like crap. I bought 2 8 ohm 20 watt non inductive resistors(installled before the caps)from Radio Shack today. They attenuate the tweets a little, but still too loud. Should I put another resistor in series? Should I get a lower value microfarad cap to cross over a higher freq? Should I build 2nd order crossover for them? Any help would be appreciated.---And is this a common occurance for components?
These components don't have a 12dB/Octave crossover? It's just a cap inline in the tweeter? 8500 doesn't sound very realistic in a mobile component set. Can you read the cap value? It doesn't have a coil? 6dB/octave is only a cap in series. I used to build 3-way passive crossover boards from scratch. I'd usually use 12dB for low/mid and 18dB for highs. Instead of throwing resistors in that soak up power, why not just lay some cloth or something over the tweets?
