Hey all. I have an MTX Thunder 500d (mono amp). I know this thing is way under rated. Manual says 250 wats @ 4 ohms and 500 watts @ 2 ohms (I read an article that said an independt test measured it at 776 wats @ 2 ohms). When I bought it the guy sold me an Alpine 10 e and said it could hang. Nope. Ripped the sucker off the frame. Then I went to a Sony explode 12 in. in the Sony box. Nope. Blew it. So I thought I need to spend a bit more. Went to Punch P2 10 in. in the correct Fosgate box. Nope. Blew that too. All 3 were run @ 4 ohms. So now I have no idea what to buy that will not blow? Money is tight so need to keep it down. I have looked around and everyone tells me I need to step up to the big boys-JL 10w6, Fosgate power series, Alpine X series, etc. All of which run in the area of $350 plus just for the sub. Any ideas????? This one shop was pushing me towards Diamond Audio. He has a 2 yr old model brand new never used. I think he said T series. Anyway he said it retails for $500 but wanted to sell it for $190 cash. I am not sure about Diamond. I don't know a lot about them. I love deep hard bass. I guess I could just lower the settings on the amp and turn the volume down and wouldn't have to worry about all of the power rushing into the sub, right? . Hell no... Thanks in advance...
it sounds like your asking a lot from 1 10 inch woofer, you are probably clipping the signal and overheating the voicecoils or your just overpowering them. if you want more bass you need to add a second woofer or maybe step up to a nice 12 incher
Thanks fstr. I think u r right. The guy at another shop also said to get 2 subs to split the power. I m thinking 2 alpine e series or the kicker comps. I liked the bass from one alpine I guess 2 would be fine. What do you think about the Diamond sub for $190. Still asking a lot from one 10 in?
I agree with Jonny, the type E and S are Alpines lower lines then the R series, then the type X. I think the type R would handle the power of the MTX. As for Kicker I have a 10 inch CVR and I had that on my 1200 watt Hifonics Brutus and it survived some severe abuse.
Oh as for the Diamond subs I really dont know, i did get one of their amps and it really suprised me at the quality, much better than my Hifonics. The guy at the shop did try to sell my their subs also, he said they were good quality but personally i have not heard them.
i know someone who ran 1 12" alpine type R with the alpind PDX 1000 watt amp, and had no issues at all. sounded incredible.
So i picked up a 10 in type R today. My Best Buy is getting rid if their supply. $87 for the SWR1042D. Now i need a box. I am using my old punch box. The specs say the box is cu volume 1.05. The sub manual says between 0.6 and 1.25 cu volume for a ported box. I want deep hard bass. Not loud bass. I know its only a 10 incher but with the right box it will hit deep. Should I go sealed or ported? I dont have the tools to make one so i will go prefab. I have seen a few and are in the $100 range. What do you think?
i say go ported. you dont need many tools to make a box...you can get the wood cut at lowes or home depot. then all you need is a jigsaw and a drill to put the box together...also, that type r should hold up fine, i had a single 12" type r on a hifonics 1206d and also on a jl audio 1000/1..it took a daily pounding just fine.
i don't understand how you kept blowing subs with the power you have. also you said the subs should have been able to handle the power. what are your levels set to on the amp? gain, boost, xover?
I have them set at halfway. The eq level is actually a bit under in hopes i dont blow out the type r. I was at Best Buy today and saw the bassworks ported box with 1.25 volume on clearance for $36.00. Yesterday they were regular price of $149. So i got it. The specs say max for the sub in a ported box is 1.25. For $36 i couldnt pass it up.
The woofers manual wouldnt happen to indicate the discplacement limited power handling for each box and at what frequencies? Cuase i tell ya what pilgrim, even the toughest sub will mechanically fail over time if its in the wrong box, even when driven at power levels less than its rated for.......
i also think there's a problem there...you shouldnt be blowing subs left and right. you should look up how to properly set your gains and the other settings on your amp
I agree with moving the settings down. I also think the problem lies in the rms ratings. Like i mentioned, @ 4 ohms my amp is rated 250 watts. But everything I read says its underrated and is putting out more. The P2 is rated at 200 watts rms. So if the amp is pumping out more and I have the gain and eq settings bumped up and at a high listening volume i think thats what did it. I m running the type R @ 2 ohms and have lowered the amp settings. Like viking said bad box will help kill any sub. I hope that these adjustments solve it. If not back to the drawing board.
Could you take a pic of all the settings and maybe we could make suggestions if something seems outta place.
So far so good. I was able to pick up a bassworx ported box cu volume 1.25 tuned to 42 hz (best buy dropped the price from $149 to $36) The type r hits hard ( i thought it would be more but its just me). I have lowered the settings on the amp. I think once i upgrade the head unit i will be happy. I am looking at the pioneer 4200dvd. 3 pre outs @ 4 volts plus an equalizer-among a few of its features. I will have more control over the sub. Thanks for all ur input.
I see two things that can be going wrong with your setup. You remind me of a friend of mine. Always wants more bass and more and more but never wants to pay the price for higher end subs and amps, wants to go cheap. Do yourself a favor and save up for a type r or type x 10 or even maybe time to step up to a 12. Second I am going to take a wild guess and say you have bass bost up on either your amp and or your head unit? Maybe LOUD as well? Turn them off even though things might sound better your doing more damage than good, your clipping your signal and sending that to your sub. Try doing that stuff and maybe even stepping up to a hifonics amp and than see how you like your bass, and see if you damage anything.
Great advice bigaudio. I totally agree. Not trying to be super cheap. I have done the $5000 set up yrs ago. I ran 2 orion hcca 2.50 @ 1 ohm into 4 pioneer IMPP, polk components connected to a 4 channel crossfire amp. Clarion head unit. All in custom ported box, correct wire, etc. All was the top of the line 20 yrs ago. It was in my Altima and would hit 137 db windows up and over 142 outlaw. I m just going by the help at the shops. Back in the day Fosgate was Fosgate. Meaning punch series only. Now they have 3 lines of product. Making things a challenge to decide what to get. Slowly through trial n error I m finding myself making my way back to the higher end ones. I do have a Type R now. And am looking into a different amp.
