is there a difference in shallow Subs vs regular subs i heard there was a difference but can they still sound good and loud?
shallow subs are made to fit in smaller places, like under the seat of a truck, that kinda thing. but shallow mount subs sound great if they are in a good box I've heard many of them and they all sounded good.
I am looking at the CVT12 Kicker and P3SD212 Rockford subs. I have about .70 each side of my box. No one around here carries them so can't compare, only about a 50.00 difference between the cost for a pair. Any ideas or thoughts? Thanks Richard Oh yeah will be pushing around 800watts RMS to them in a Nissan Titan Crew Cab down firing box.
Just remember, shallow subs are good to add a little substage to your system, not shake the whole truck apart. Personally of the 2, I have liked how the RF's sounded over the kickers.
if your looking for daily driving then shallows are no problem! you want to move air and push a metter then they are not what u ant
Can I disagree with you? Please. A speakers ability to move air is directly related to its surface area. In other words, given any two woofers that are the same size, they will have the same ability to move air. Basic physics. Period. Seriously, one woofer is not louder than another. One brand is not better than another. I have built a shallow mount woofer box and it rocked. Every one that heard this system thought it had two 12's. They were shocked to see only one Pioneer Slim mount 12
a shallow mount woffer while it has the same surface area dosnt have the same stroke " amount of travel" thus it will move less air. and lol brands are better then others. materials they are made out off , size of the coil , what the coils is made of not saying that shallows are not a great way to get some bass in to small areas i have a box in my Chevy but same amp and two different subs produce two different spls and freg.
I'm not sure you worded that right. Just because a woofer can handle more power won't make it louder, unless you give it that power. In other words, if you have two woofers, one rated at 200 watts RMS and one rated at 600 watts RMS and you have a 300 watt RMS amp, the 200-watt RMS woofer will perform MUCH better and louder. Now if you have a 600-watt amp, then the 600-watt RMS woofer will perform better and louder. WRONG. Excursion is a power waster. Speaker manufactures needed a way to increase power handling without making better voice coils. Voice coils that can handle 600 or more watts are expensive and would increase the cost of the speaker. No one would buy them. So excursion was the answer. Excursion wastes huge amounts of power, but it allows for better cooling of the voice coil. Now cheaper voice coils can be used in speakers with high RMS ratings Lets look at my van, its speakers barely moved 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch and yet it would do a 168.2dB Now let me finish, your statement is true only if your using enough power. As I stated earlier, if I take a 12-inch Pioneer slim mount and a 12-inch Planet Audio Big Bang and a 400-watt RMS amp, the Pioneer speaker will win, easily. If you have a 900-watt RMS amp the Planet speaker will win If I take two 12-inch speakers with the same power handling, the Pioneer Slim Mount and a JL 12W0, performance will be the same. Don't believe me, try it. I've been there.
lol funny cause my first box had 16 planet audio 10s and lol was 5 db louder then with the pioner shallows! and it only ran 2800 rms
I find that super hard to believe and let me explain why. Measuring loudness (dB ) is a logarithmic function. An increase of 3dB is almost twice as loud. An increase of 6db is almost four times as loud. I have never seen a speaker change (everything else stays the same) result in more than a 1dB change. Now keep in mind that I've only been a professional installer for 12-years, I gave it up just recently to teach math. If you know something I don't please tell me. The surface area is what moves a specific amount of air. I stand by what I said, surface area moves air. Two speakers with the same surface area moves the same amout of air. Excursion doesnt matter because it didnt change the surface area, we are still moving the same amount of air. Now if we are discussing volume, the volume of the air in the vehicle didnt change because we put a different speaker in the car. The term decibel (dB ) is defined as dB = 10*log(P1/P0) where "log" is base 10 and P1 and P0 are the actual sound excess pressure between two pressures P1 and P0 Try this, get a shovel, scoop as much dirt as you can on it and throw it as far as you can. Then, with the same shovel, scoop as much dirt as you can and drop it a couple of feet from the pile. Please notice that you moved the SAME amount of dirt in both cases.
WOW thanks for all the replys!!! This is a really good discussion. I think I have made my mind to go with the rockford shallow mounts. Power wise they will be pushed to there true RMS wattage. I was a car audio installer for 5 years before I joined the military (12 years ago) and just have started getting back into things. Back then there were not any shallow mount per say- I think soundstream just had came out with their flat piston woofer, but that was it. So since everyone has chimed in on my shallowmounts- here is something that goes along with it- like I stated in my ralier post I ahve a nissan titan that has the factory rockford with nav etc- impratical to change out. Right now I have a cheap walmart brand hi level converter. I just orderd a Rockford Fosgate RF-BLD balanced Line driver- anyone have any experience with hi-level converters, much difference, and will the rockford one be plenty. Once I get my subs in- hopefully by next weekend, I will post pictures and let everyone know how they sound. Again thanks for the input- really glad I stumpled onto this forum. Look forward to passing on what knowledge I have with other (12 electronics). Richard

The van is competition ONLY. The only speakers in it are the two 18-inch FUs. There are no other speakers in it. Also, when a vehicle gets that loud, no one is in it. The radio hooks up outside the van.
