I've been having trouble getting big sound out of my mtx 9500 15. Its in my srt neon. I built an L box yesterday with a tuned fq of 30hz. It hits harder then my small sealed box I was using before. I used http://www.reaudio.com/speaker_box/LPort_Box_Calc.html to do design it and simply input my maximum width and depth into it. Since then I've been explained a little more too. I've got a whole other sheet of 3/4 mdf and am wondering if i should build one with a different port size. Would it be worth the time?

How large is the box would be the first question that I have.

If you were my customer, I would have built box as large as reasonably possible and tuned the port some where between 40 and 45 Hz. I'm generalizing because I dont have specs for your speaker.

Just changing your tuning from 30 to 35Hz will increase your relative gain and sound output

I'm gonna see if I can find specs on your woofer

OK, the recommendations on MTX website is an enclosure 2.25 cu ft with a port tuning of 34 HZ

My recommendation will be an enclosure volume of 3.25 to 3.5 cu ft, this should fit in a neon with no problem. I would also change the port tuning frequency to between 38 and 40 HZ.

    That should help

Ok thanks man... a few more questions.. I was told awhile back by some uncredible person that it doesnt matter which way the sub faces because lower freq travels evenly in all directions. Is that the case?. Ive had my sub facing upwards. Is that a big deal? Last one. I hear alot of people say sealed is the only way to got if you listen to rock? What do you think about that statement? Thanks for all your input!

The volume looks like it will be about 3.9 cu ft, so minus the port area we should be pretty close. But can you really fit a 22.5 inch tall enclosure in the trunk of your car?????????????

The woofer and the port should be facing toward the rear of the car.

I'm gonna play with those measurements later today or tomorrow and see what I come up with.

I really prefer the sound of a sealed box, but if you want loud ported is the way to go.

I think I got it right.

The total outside dimensions should be 20.5 deep by 26.75 wide by 16.5 tall

The 17.25 measurement is the measurement from the port opening to the end of the port. Whats important here is that the port opening in the box should be 2.5 inches. This should put the tuning between 36 to 38 Hz.

I'll try it...16.5 tall is gonna be a challenge getting it in there...it would be real close.. I guess the only way to know for sure is to build it. Hopefully i'll get it built tommarrow and let you know. Thanks for your help.

I like it to hit hard and clean. This car has had so many sub combinations i didnt like its rediculous. I havent really tried a speaker specific box so i appreciate your help. That box i built the other day has kind of a thud sound to it that is hard to get rid of...i wonder if thats because its firing up

Your dimensions show a 22.5-inch height.

The main problem is that the woofer (and port) needs to face the rear of the car, this is important. Listen, measure first then build, if it won't work then give me some dimensions that will work, I'll see what I can do.

Lets design a box that will fit in the car

I mean it would be real close. I know using the 14.5 as a depth when i had it pointed upward would just barely clear with the sub in it...The sub does pretrude quite a bit out of the box so it would be damn close. Those numbers dont sound very adj if the sub has got to face toward the back. You gotta have atleast an inch over top of the sub diameter.

Thanks man...BIG difference...I still think im running outta power for it but that sub box def made a huge difference

Your welcome, its amazing how a little port retuning and slightly increasing box size will change performance.

Ported boxes are great for controlling subs, so don't be afraid to throw alot of power at it.

    Was the fit OK?

It just barely fitted. I had to pull all the plastic pieces and trunk latch. Yea it is def louder. It hits hard but still doesnt kill like I think an 800 msrp dollar speaker should. Im running an American Bass D1000 at 2ohms. I've been having a voltage problem running at 13.0 volts with spikes into the low 12s. Now i dont know the exact specs of that amp but Im assuming 1000 stands for 1000 at 1ohm. Im not really sure where to go from now. I've got 2 small drycells I could throw in there. Im not against buying a bigger amp. But right now past 3/4 volume and my 4channel amp gets weak and the volume wont go louder. Gains are up vary little.

Do you think you could guess how many watts r making it to the sub. And do you think i would benefit from more?

Well you're sub can handle a clean 1500 watts rms.

Also if the voltage goes from high to low it is not a spike....it is call a voltage drop or dip. Spike would be an increase.

lol I know what a spike is dude. Just a typical brain fart. Thanks for your willingness to jump in there and set me straight.

Loud has nothing to do with the sub. In a ported box, the port makes most of the sound, especially the closer we get to tuning frequency.

First rule of physics, all 15-inch subs have the same surface area and therefore the same ability to be loud. There is no real difference between a 200 dollar sub and an 800 dollar sub.

Now lets get real. An 800 dollar sub is probably a competion type sub, really stiff suspensions, large magnet and great power handleing. These subs need power, and need to be driven at RMS or slightly higher. They need power to perform at there best.

In most comp systems that we do, we always have a battery near the amps

Power drops are always hard on amps, especially a class D. There is no substitude for having a battery next to the amp.

Thanks for the beer offer, but I quit drinking 20 years and 7 months ago.

    How about an expresso
