what does the bitrate go up to on yours when you play it now and how big is the file now. The site is making me wait 5 minutes to post so pictures are coming!

My file size increased to 9.82mb with the settings I'm using. I don't have winamp, so I first burned a CD then ripped it with Audiograbber. ( it says the average bit rate is 224 )

Anyway I will compare the CD, with the 128 CBR and the VBR tomorrow morning. The only question I have is the original quality of the downloaded file. But lets see what happens.

Why did your file end up so much larger? Your average bit rate is 239. Mine was 224. I don't think there should have been more than 1 Mb difference.

Something to look at and think about.

The only real difference would be the quality preset I'm using

But how is that affecting the final size?

Its getting near my bed time ( I'm nearly 50 remember)

    Look at post #23

We are both using lame encoders, your version is 3.96 mine is 3.97.
Both versions are capable of user defined presets. The only real differance is I am using a user defined present and you are not.

We need to find a way to compare the quality of a song.

We need to start another thread tommorow, this has been interesting

Hey Ranger, keep this thread going instead of making another, it will be good for others to learn. This thread should get huge hits, even from outside the site. Give it a couple weeks for the bots to go around the internet.:) The title is perfect.

When I first got the Ipod, I ripped using Media Player, the sound quality was awfull. I don't use it any more except to play music or video.

Whatever encoder Media Player uses is definately second rate.

Hey maybe we can include a couple of other members in our friendly competition. Here is what I propose. You and I both rip a song (same song) and sent it to someone from this forum who has the song on CD.

That person can burn our files as MP3's and compare them to the original.

    Hey Viking wanna play?
